Club Overview
Welcome to the society. The committee hopes that you enjoy the activities organised at our monthly meetings and that you will also contribute to them in some way when you feel comfortable to do so.
This society has been in existence since 1972 and caters for members who collect or build "scale" models. Associated with this is the basic improvement of members' modelling skills and techniques.
We meet on the second Wednesday of each month at the Hellenic Club in Woden at 7.30 PM. Many members choose to arrive earlier to have dinner and a beer before the meeting.
The important part of the society's title is SCALE. While plastic remains the most commonly used modelling medium, models submitted for regular competitions can be made of any substance (for example: wood, resin, or metal) but must be to a documented scale.
The society's charter caters for all ages and skill levels, with our major aim being the promotion of the hobby and improving the modelling standards of society members. To this end we hold regular workshops and discussions on skills and techniques at our monthly meetings.
Aircraft are the main subject of models made by our membership, followed closely by military vehicles. Other subjects modelled by our membership include ships, cars, trucks, motorcycles, figures, science fiction vehicles and other minor specialist subjects.
It is our aim to make our monthly meetings as entertaining as possible; that begins with members turning up from 7:00 PM to give us the maximum time to meet and talk. All entries for competitions must be entered by 7:45 PM to give judges as much time as possible to judge your efforts. Competitions are open to financial members only. Meetings generally finish around 10:30 PM.
An average meeting normally involves: society business, tea break, the night's planned activity, the model competition and a raffle. While we endeavour to keep the society business part of the meeting as short as possible, it is important as it informs all in attendance of what is coming up, and allows members to share any news and rumours of relevance to modelling. Given that an average of 70 to 80 per cent of our members show up at each of our meetings we feel that this format has proven to be a successful one.
We continue to have tables set up for reference material, work in progress and new kits and products. We encourage all our members to support this concept and bring along your books and model kits - made or unmade! It is especially good to see models as they progress to completion as well as those new kits that you cannot get a look at in the shops because they are wrapped in plastic.
Our society is one of many clubs based in NSW that competes each June at the NSW Interclub. This allows our members to participate in open competition with some of the best modellers in Australia.
Please talk to a committee member if you wish to request a particular demonstration. We will try to satisfy any request from our members through either open discussion in our business segment, or by incorporating it as part of a planned demonstration.
We also encourage all members to contribute to our monthly newsletter. Our newsletter is published each month and is free to members, so any kit reviews, conversion articles, museum or airshow visits, or basically anything to do with either building or collecting models will be published - with many thanks for contributions from our editor!
